TUTOR COUNSELOR

DESCRIPTION:

 

The Higher Education Opportunity Program is a comprehensive academic support services program designed for New York State residents who have not had educational opportunities which prepared them for college and who meet the income guidelines established by the Board of Regents.

 

HEOP students receive a broad range of innovative support services, including participation in a 6-week pre-freshman Summer Program, academic, personal and career counseling, individual and small group tutoring, leadership training and student development workshops.

 

The College and the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program jointly sponsor the HEOP program.  Students are admitted without regard to age, sex, sexual orientation, race, disability or creed.

 

The Tutor Counselor position includes various roles that are essential to the positive supervision of the pre-freshman.  The TC must be a role model, illustrating the appropriate behavior of a college student.  He/she must follow the rules, regulations and policies established by Marist College and HEOP at all times.  As a counselor, the TC takes on a helping or advising role to assist students throughout the Summer Program and the academic year.  The TC serves as a disciplinarian during the Summer Program but not during the academic year.  A Peer Counselor (PC) is responsible to plan educational, cultural, social and recreation programs during the Summer Program and both the PC and TC are responsible to do this during the academic year.  The TC will assist the PC with program implementation during the summer program.  During the Summer Program the TC will also serve as a tutor for the Math course and potentially a Special Topic course.  During the academic year the TC continues to work with the first year students and may be expected to work in the HEOP Office.  The TC position may be used as an internship.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·         The Tutor Counselor must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.9 and B+ or better in college level math courses and knowledge of computers.

 

·         Applications will be accepted from first year students, but preference will be given to current sophomores and juniors.

 

·         You must demonstrate having the qualities of being a positive role model.

 

·         You must be willing and able to attend training sessions with the HEOP staff throughout the Spring 2004 semester.

 

·         You will be expected to return to campus for training no earlier than Monday, June 21, 2004.  You will need to be available throughout the Summer Program that runs from Sunday, June 27 to Friday, August 6, 2004.

 

 

 

OVER

 

·         Although the Tutor Counselor position is a yearlong position, continuance in the position is based on satisfactory performance.  Preference will be given to applicants who are interested in holding the position for more than one year.

 

·         Experience dealing with young adults and/or a similar type of program is a plus.

 

·        The Tutor Counselor will also serve as a tutor for the Math course and potentially a Special Topic course.  The Tutor Counselor will be expected to attend class with the students and tutor them during study sessions and during other times.

·         The Tutor Counselor will also assist with the implementation of activities and special events.

 

·         The HEOP Office does require a certain dress code during the summer and while working in the office during the academic year.  This will be further discussed during your interview.

 

REMUNERATION:

 

·         Room and board for the six-weeks during the Summer Program. Board is not included on most weekends or during the training period.

 

·         The projected salary for the Summer 2004 is $2184, which includes the six-week program and a week of training.  The above figures are pending Summer Program funding approval from the State Education Department Higher Education Opportunity Program Bureau, which occurs after the 2004 New York State budget is passed.  During the academic year the TC may have the opportunity to work in the office.  It is expected that the TC continue contact with the students.  The TC may also have the opportunity to tutor first year students in math during the academic year.  The rate of pay during the academic year is based on the established rate of pay for a Level 2 student employee for time spent with the students or the tutor rate for any tutoring time.

 

·         The TC position may be used as an internship for some majors.

·         A completed Student Employment Application, available in the HEOP Office.

 

·         An essay that covers the following information: 1) Why do you want to be an HEOP Tutor Counselor? 2) How was your pre-freshman summer experience? (If applicable)  3) In your opinion, what should be expected of the Tutor Counselor?  4) What academic and social issues are important for the pre-freshmen to learn to help them during the academic year?
